Carbonic Dry Ice – Safety Precautions
If you have not used or have limited experience in using Dry Ice, here are some Safety precautions that you should follow in advance of your purchase:
Never Touch Dry Ice With Your Hands or Allow Dry Ice To Come In Contact With Bare Skin
Did you know that Dry Ice has a surface temperature of -80°C? For safety reasons, you should never let Dry Ice touch your skin. If it does come into contact for more than a few seconds, you are at significant risk of experiencing frostbite. Use tongs or wear a pair of insulated gloves to avoid any incidents or accidents. For more information call a Carbonic dry ice representative. We are more than happy to explain how to use dry ice safely.
Buy When You Need Dry Ice
Anyone who purchases Dry Ice needs to understand that it is not going to last more than a few hours once the box is opened as it is solid carbon dioxide and the process of sublimation begins as soon as it is manufactured. Storing it in a fridge won’t extend its life as it is far colder than the atmosphere in a refrigerator. Also, if you store the box in your fridge you are at risk of freezing everything in your fridge and also damaging the thermostat and electrical components as they have not been designed to handle such extreme temperatures. Since this is the case, you need to strategically plan when you purchase it or pick it up. If you need Dry Ice for an event, there is no sense in buying it more than a day in advance.
Store Dry Ice In The Same Packing As Is Supplied To You
Carbonic International Supplies Dry Ice to you in an Insulated Pack. You need to ensure that the package is kept in a sufficiently ventilated area. You do not want to store Dry Ice in your freezer because the temperature of Dry Ice is much colder than the temperature of your freezer. Use packages of dry ice only in storage containers that are appropriate i.e., non-sealable Styrofoam containers that allow the pressure release of C02 sublimation through the lid and box even if it is covered by tape.
Let Any Extra Dry Ice Sublimate In A Well Ventilated Place
Don’t discard your extra Dry Ice into a Dustbin or Sink. It could result in major damage. Instead leave it in the box and allow it to sublimate in an adequately ventilated area. A few kg would normally sublimate in an hour or two if left open. The primary hazards of dry ice to observe with caution are burns and asphyxiation. Insulated gloves must be worn when handling dry ice ensuring adequately ventilated areas to avoid depletion of oxygen levels that could result in asphyxiation when levels of 40000 PPM are exceeded.
